- Huge congrats to Chris Hamel on completing his Masters degree Chris is officially the first Master’s student from our lab. He started with me during my second year as a PI, and I definitely learned as much from this process as he as (if not more). On top of the typical challenges associated with graduate work, Chris also found time to get married and buy his first home, and met setbacks related to the covid pandemic with maturity and determination.
- Congrats to Tracy and Andrew Some big congrats are in order:
- Congrats to Serena on a Great Poster Serena presented a poster on her exciting work at the CSUS Student Research Symposium 2019, titled “Developing Clarkia rhomboidea as a natural model for the concurrent investigation of the genomics and ecological impacts of allopolyploidy”
- Another Great Year With Even Greater'er Researchers! The 2018/19 academic year has come and gone, and we finished it off by gathering around a nintendo for some Smash Bros.
- Congrats to Maya and Serena This year Maya and Serena were awarded the Albert Delisle Family Scholarship and the Biology Laureates Endowed Scholarship.
- New paper on the use of synthetic RNAs in diploid/polyploid comparisons Available here
- Exciting Times for the Visger Lab - NSF IOS Grant Awarded NSF IOS 1754072, Collaborative Research: RUI: Understanding the effects of ploidal level on responses to global change in plants is a research award for a project investigating the effects of ploidal level on fern gametophyte physiology and gene expression during periods of climate stress. This is a collaborative project between the Sessa lab at University of Florida, the Watkins lab at Colgate, and the Visger lab.
- Funding awarded to study yeast polyploids CSU Program for Education & Research in Biotechnology (CSUPERB) awarded us funding to pursue our project titled: Integrating synthetic RNA normalization with Ribo-seq to evaluate the genome-wide impact of polyploidy at the interface of the transcriptome and the translatome in Saccharomyces cerevisiae
- Congrats to Serena! Time to break the update hiatus with some good news. Serena, one of the first members to join the Visger lab, was just the Biology Laureates Endowed Scholarship.
- New Preprint Available You can find a preprint of our MS on the use of synthetic RNAs for transcript abundance normalization in cross ploidy gene expression level comparisons.
- Visger Lab's newest member On 14 July 17 we had the pleasure of welcoming Ollie Melvin Visger to the world.
- Advice from the Thompson Lab Early on in graduate school I had the pleasure of meeting John Thompson. After meeting him, and snooping his webpage, I stumbled on to his Treatise on being successful in Academia. If you are considering a career in academic it is 100% worth a read – there are some major gems of wisdom, as well as plenty of general non-academic advice.
- Interested in joining? We currently have a need for a self-motivated undergrad or two interested in learning ecological modeling or cytogenetics. There are several projects that you, the interested undergrad, could get involved in; including both applied modeling and methods development, and microscopy/chromosome work.
- Research page is live First attempt at summarizing the current research plans for the lab is up. Still a work in progress, with the niche modeling summary needing some love.
- New website up and running Testing out things.
